Its been raining quite a lot in Karachi, which I might add is saying something considering that rain, here, is a lost commodity. With rain comes the usual road flooding, as a journalist aptly puts it, “ a 3 inch tsunami.” Life couldn’t be better as we stand by and watch the scene unfold. The newly built underpass, whose drainage had been so publicly emphasized and appreciated, steadily, became our very own swimming pool…grand. The 3 sword round about didn’t quite want to be left behind, and thus became home to another cozy pool.
So here i was slightly oblivious to the disaster that awaited, excited at the prospect of showing my cousin (from Punjab) the city i proudly called home. Joy. Half way down the road, lost in the small galee’s of Bath Island, my poor car rocked back and forth swaying to the small tides that were presenting themselves in the water below. All you needed were strong wooden oars and we could’ve rowed our way to the mall ( we were headed for the ill fated “Forum” which oblivious to me had sunk inches deep in water.) I was merely contemplating on how best to describe the scenario to my cousin to whom I had been all praises for this city when a slight wetness on my feet caught my attention. And voila, there it was, the brown murky street water, seeping into my car. Eww. I was speechless.
Anyhow, we finally made our way towards another mall which had had a better fortune and was gloating peacefully. A couple days later, (with a thorougly disgruntled cousin who didnt quite care muh for karachi) I was making my way back from my first day at the internship, when i became a witness to yet another catastrophe. The newly built road near the underpass ( mind you the underpass had been cleared in but a day and road blocks had been formed on either side to make sure the water didnt seep through), this road, ladies n gentlemen, ran from Gulf all the way down Mehran Market, to Uzma Market ending blissfully at Agha's Super Market (basically it ran a long length).
Now here was this road, which took the administration about six months to build, with they boasted a brand new n state of the art water disposal system. Aha. Well this "beautiful" road had been broken at the sides, the pipelines hammered apart and laid out for the public to see and amaze at the absolute waste of money and time.
I'm sure my cousin will be coming back soon.
